Summary
This case study shows how I improved a residential plumbing and sewer company’s Google Ads performance by reducing wasted spend, tightening targeting, and rewriting ads around trust and local intent. By removing irrelevant placements, adding nearly 100 negative keywords, and updating the creative to highlight social proof and same-day service, I made the campaign significantly more efficient. Compared with the prior period, total conversions increased by 206.67%, phone call leads increased by 183.33%, conversion rate improved by 644.48%, and cost per conversion dropped by 35.33%.
This case study covers a residential plumbing and sewer company’s Google Ads account. The business already had a strong local reputation, hundreds of five star reviews, but its Google Ads account did not produce leads that matched that reputation. Here is what I found, what I changed, and what happened.
Results At a Glance
| Metric | Change |
| Total Conversions | +206.67% |
| Phone Call Leads | +183.33% |
| Conversion Rate | +644.48% |
| Cost Per Conversion | −35.33% |
All of this happened without raising the advertising budget. The gain came from traffic quality, not traffic volume.
Client Overview
The client is a residential plumbing and sewer business serving homeowners in a competitive regional market. They had hundreds of five star reviews and a strong local reputation, but the Google Ads account was underperforming relative to how good the business was on the ground.
The Problem
The account was spending money on clicks that were never going to become customers. Strong reviews and real technicians were not translating into a strong lead volume because the ads were reaching the wrong people.
What I Found During the Google Ads Audit
Search Traffic Was Too Broad
The account was attracting a wide mix of irrelevant traffic, including people searching for plumbing jobs, users browsing unrelated mobile apps, low intent searchers just looking for general information, and people researching competitor brands. None of that traffic was close to being a paying customer.
Negative Keyword Gaps
There was no meaningful negative keyword list in place, so the account had no way to filter out job seekers, DIY researchers, or people looking for training and certification information.
Ad Messaging & Local Intent
The ad copy was not doing enough to separate this company from every other plumber running similar generic ads in the same market.
The Strategy
Campaign Restructuring
I rebuilt the campaign structure so budget could be tracked and adjusted by actual service type instead of one blended plumbing category.
Negative Keyword Strategy
I added close to 100 negative keywords across several categories: employment searches, DIY plumbing queries, training and certification terms, competitor brand searches, and non-service related plumbing terminology. This stopped the account from paying for clicks that had zero chance of converting.
Ad Copy & Offer Positioning
I rewrote Responsive Search Ads to lead with trust signals that differentiate this company: 390 plus five star reviews, an award winning designation, licensed and insured technicians, same day service availability, family owned status, and more than 20 years serving the local community. These are the details that make a homeowner pick up the phone instead of scrolling to the next ad.
Conversion Tracking
I confirmed phone call tracking was capturing leads accurately, since a plumbing business gets a large share of its real leads by phone rather than a web form.
Geographic Targeting
I tightened targeting to the company’s actual service area so budget was not being spent reaching homeowners outside the zones they can realistically serve.
The Results
Removing wasted spend and irrelevant traffic, then rewriting ad copy around real trust signals, produced this:
| Metric | Performance Change |
| Total Conversions | +206.67% |
| Phone Call Leads | +183.33% |
| Conversion Rate | +644.48% |
| Cost Per Conversion | −35.33% |
Why the Strategy Worked
Many underperforming plumbing campaigns do not actually have a traffic problem. They have a targeting problem. This account was already getting clicks, it just was not getting the right clicks. Once the negative keyword list filtered out job seekers, DIYers, and competitor researchers, the remaining traffic converted at a dramatically higher rate, which is why the conversion rate improvement (+644.48%) is so much larger than the conversion volume improvement. The ad copy change added a second lift on top of that by genuinely interested homeowners a clear reason to choose this company over the next listing.
What I Would Do Differently Today
I would build the negative keyword list before the first campaign launch rather than after the first review cycle. In accounts like this one, the wasted spend on job seekers and DIY searches is predictable enough that it can be prevented from day one instead of cleaned up after the fact.
Lessons Other Plumbing Companies Can Apply
- A strong local reputation does not automatically show up in your Google Ads results. The account still needs to be targeted correctly to reflect that reputation.
- Job seekers and DIY searchers are common budget drains in plumbing accounts. A dedicated negative keyword list built around your specific services stops this early.
- Trust signals belong in the ad copy itself, not just on your website. Review counts, licensing, and years in business earned this account a meaningfully higher click through and conversion rate.
- Track phone calls as conversions. A plumbing business that only counts form fills is blind to a large share of its real lead volume.
- A big jump in conversion rate with a modest jump in traffic usually means you fixed a targeting problem, not that you got lucky.
Data and Methodology
Figures above reflect a before and after comparison of the account following the negative keyword build and ad copy rewrite described in this case study. Before publishing any updated figures, all metrics should be verified against the underlying Google Ads reporting.
